Broken Plate Trivet

I mentioned in another post that I have a collection of antique china, well I'm not the only one. My sisters have their own collections and so I have a collection of broken pieces as well from my own items and my sisters. They are too pretty to throw away. So what do I do with them? I turn them into mosaic of course!

Here is another one. This is the complete cake plate belonging to one of my sisters. The plate was from a set called Windsor made by Tuscany of England. My sister bought the set from England when she was staying there and had them shipped over to Australia when she came back. But when she opened the box, a few pieces were broken. This was among them (including a tureen!).

I admit that I have a large collection of antique china from England although I'm not one of those people who store away their collections and never use them. I love to host tea parties and luncheons when I have time and when I do I usually take out my fine china. However, I'm not in the habit of cracking my china just to make mosaics. They are hands off when it comes to art and craft.

Having said that, I have quite a few pieces that are old with chips and cracks. Also, sometimes when I purchase them online, a few pieces get broken during delivery without proper packaging. I used to get upset when they get broken because it is such a waste but I've recently taken up recycling them by using them in my mosaics.

How to Make a Mosaic Flower Placemat

If you know me then you'll know that I've been making coasters and small square boxes with children. The reason is because the small square shape is easy for children to work with - easy to fill and quick to do. Which was why I started this placemat project a while ago but never finished. But I decided that I will get this done and I did. So here are the instructions.

Materials:

A rectangular wooden placemat

Mosaic tiles, colour of your choice. Here I'd chosen beige, lilac, soft pinks, dark purple and contrastig soft blue and green

PVA glue

Small paintbrush

Glass cutter

Grout, white

Small Mosaic Boxes

This is a tiny mosaic box great for storing rings, earrings, keys, coins etc. The box used was a craft box made out of hard board. I made a mosaic of the top of the lid then painted the sides. I picked out the heart design of the mosaic and painted the heart on the sides of the box.
